Any day now, Viva Vadim

35,00 €

Is it really okay to be gay? », « What if you had been there? », « Did you know? ».

ENGLISH
Any Day Now brings together photographs by Viva Vadim–a large body of work taken mainly across the United States–united through their underlying sense that something could happen at any moment, a world suspended at an uncertain juncture.

Interspersed within the analog photographs are found leaflets Viva has collected and scanned, discovered largely while travelling in New York City, on subway cars and sidewalks. Seen together, they form a portrait of an America that questions, calls out, and searches for answers: “Is it really okay to be gay?”, “What if you had been there?”, “Did you know?” She has also preserved flyers found on the streets of numerous cities—ephemera tracing the places where people search, warn, ask, and make announcements: lost dogs, found glasses, a man looking for a woman to fall in love with.

The photographs and printed materials tell parallel stories of anticipation and anxiety. In a country defined by its vast open expanses, emptiness becomes a space for suspense, where things always seem on the verge of shifting. This sense of waiting, of hoping for salvation, revelation, or answers, is echoed in the omnipresence of religion throughout the book.
